Need a Ride from Reno to BRC on Friday 8/29

Last year was my first burn and until recently I didn't think I was going this year. But it so happens that I can come for the weekend, which is way better than nothing at all. To save time, I'm catching a flight from Long Beach to Reno ($90 only) and will be there around 1 PM on Friday, August 29.
I wonder whether any of you has a spot for a one-way Reno to BRC. Will contribute in any way, gas, driving, and good vibes.

Cheers
Assaf

Due to the help of Kahele Dunn, Marie Gilbert, Jeff Carver, and Darren Barnes; of Will Chase and the Burning Man webteam, Andie Grace, Marian Goodall, Tom Price, and Paul Schreer; with the previous contributions of Chris Lowery, Natalie Voss, Elaine Hirt, and Terry; and with the openness and feedback, and committment and resourcefulness of many local businesses, agencies, officials, and fellow burners to the Burning Man community, all so near and dear to the playa -- and of course with the help of life itself, as all of this creativity is simply not just human work -- this year's updates to the Preparation - Reno Pages are now live:

Pre-Playa Gift for Smokers

If you are a smoker and would like to stop and be free of the habit smoking by Burning Man I have a gift for you.

In addition to teaching people how to walk on broken glass (my American Dream); this year’s project is to help as many Burners as I can break free from the habit of smoking.

If you have had the opportunity to walk on broken glass with me you already know I am a teacher that marches to the beat of a different drummer. My methods are drug free and, if I say so myself, amazing. I will use a variety of tools and techniques during our time together. Just like we are all different, how I approach each person will not be the same. My main focus and expertise are in the areas of NLP, EFT and hypnosis.

While I have been doing this for a while, I would love to really master my techniques before the event. If you’re a smoker, look at it this way, your stepping up now will be helping me help other Burners quit smoking on the playa. Think how amazing it would feel to go to Burning Man a smoker and return home smoke free? By your quitting now you could be part of changing a Burner’s life.

I also will extend this offer to any friends or loved ones you know. While my offer is open to all who read this, just like on the playa, my availability is limited. So I would encourage you to step up quickly.

Part of what makes what I do so effective is I only work with people who truly want to quit and understand the meaning of commitment, personal responsibility and integrity. This is part of the reason I get results in my work and why I offer money back guarantees. Since I am not charging for my services here and offering them as a gift, my guarantee is, I will do all I can, within my power, to help you break from of the habit of smoking.

Smokers can email me at doug@doughark.com if you have a desire to change your life and go to Burning Man a non-smoker.

I look forward to working with you.

Help Bruce Lee for the week of BurningMan

This year after the burn I will relocate somewheres on the west coast. I live in a beautiful van/class c vehicle and will be taking it to this years event seeing that I am living the amerICan dream. My dog friend Bruce Lee lives with me and seeing that BM doesn't let beings in dog suits come..... I was hoping to reach out to the community and see if anyone that lives within 5 hrs. of Gerlach can/would watch him for those 8 days.
He is a magical dog. He has even visited me in his spirit body in 05 due to him being sprayed by a skunk in LA while I was watching the Burn.
He has the ability to convert non dog lovers. He can hi/low five you. He can roll over. He listens like a person. He does not like cats :( or any rodents. He chills when you are chilling he plays when its time to play. He loves children and all other dogs besides Boxers (he was attacked when young). He is 6.5 X 6 +1 = 37 years old. YOU will love him and I will probably have to snatch him in the night to get him back.
Please let me know if you or anyone might be able to help. I am picky I want someone who loves dogs and would like a cool friend to hang out with.. .go to the park... chase squirrels, attract petters, and if your really lucky ... spoon with.

Four Rideshare Locations in Reno-Sparks during Burning Man...

Though most folks reading this won't be needing a ride to the playa, maybe you'll have some free room in your vehicle to bring someone you are comfortable with along with you to Burning Man? In any case, remember that no tickets will be sold at the gate, that the Melting Pot is the only place in town to get a ticket (exact cash only), and please if you can spread the word...

There are going to be four Rideshare locations in the Reno-Sparks area to hook up or offer a ride to the playa during Burning Man:

Three of the Save Mart supermarkets (formerly Albertsons) and Whole Foods Market (formerly Wild Oats).

Whole Foods is right next to US-395 in the southern stretch of Reno, two of the Save Marts straddle the west and east parts of the region along I-80, and the other participating Save Mart is nearest to the Reno-Tahoe International Airport:

Here are the locations:

Whole Foods Market (formerly known as Wild Oats and at a new location)
6139 South Virginia St - 775-852-8023
South Reno, next to US-395

Save Mart Supermarket
525 Keystone Avenue, 775-786-2150
West Reno, next to I-80

http://www.google.com/maps?f=l&hl=en&geocode=&q=save+mart&near=Reno,+NV&jsv=120&sll=39.505895,-119.829254&sspn=0.080528,0.153809&ie=UTF8&ei=7KiHSOHAB4i4igPZo-ykBw&cd=3&cid=39528425,-119828905,15026465407906653739&li=lmd&z=14&t=m

Save Mart Supermarket
195 West Plumb Lane, 775-786-0138
Nearest to the airport

http://www.google.com/maps?f=l&hl=en&geocode=&q=save+mart&near=Reno,+NV&jsv=120&sll=39.505976,-119.829143&sspn=0.080528,0.153809&ie=UTF8&ei=KqmHSIiIO5v2iwOf3t24Bw&cd=1&cid=39505651,-119807121,9467980083349627362&li=lmd&z=14&t=m

Save Mart Supermarket
565 East Prater Way, 775-359-9450
Sparks, near I-80

http://www.google.com/maps?f=l&hl=en&geocode=&q=save+mart&near=Reno,+NV&jsv=120&sll=39.505976,-119.829143&sspn=0.080528,0.153809&ie=UTF8&ei=U6mHSMivK6SKjQPJnsCuBw&cd=8&cid=39541881,-119736721,14495390934484126662&li=lmd&z=14&t=m

A little history. Back a few years Fred Hagemeister VERY generously offered here among many other things a more-or-less first of its kind anywhere Rideshare base, where burners could both pick up or stop by and offer a ride at the Black Rock International Burner Hostel HQ...For various reasons, Albertsons (now Save Mart) on Prater Way in Sparks sort of served as a Rideshare spot subsequently,...and for the past few years Twin City Surplus with the help of Rick Brown has served this need.

Generally what we are looking at these days is the fact that A LOT of burners shop at Whole Foods Market and these three Save Marts before and during Burning Man, because of their proximity, inventories, and services, and it was natural and easy to see these stores -- i.e. their parking lots -- more concertedly serving also as simple and well-known bases for burners to look forward to for hooking up a free ride to the playa.
__________

Additional information to look forward to and perhaps share:

These three Save Mart supermarkets are also hosting Kiwanis Bikes (at Keystone) and Black Rock Bicycles (at these 3 locations), who will be selling used (Kiwanis) and new bikes in the parking lots during Burning Man. In case you or someone else needs a bike for the playa, Black Rock Bicycles and Kiwanis are again simply building upon offering this as a service to the bicycling burner community with Save Mart, without any of them really making any money.

Kiwanis Bike Project -- www.kiwanisbikes.org

Black Rock Bicycles -- www.blackrockbicycles.com

Whole Foods is also offering a free playa-bike exchange. Have an extra, drop it off -- Need one, maybe there will be one for you during Burning Man -- Done with it, drop it off afterwards.

Finally, the Save Mart supermarkets and Whole Foods Market will also be operating free drive-thru recycling centers for both during and after the event. More info on this later...

AIRPLAYAINFO - BURNING MAN INFO IN THE RENO AIRPORT

AirPlayaInfo - Reno Airport Friday August 22 - Friday August 29, 2008

This year Burning Man and Playa Info, in cooperation with the Reno
Airport and the Reno Convention and Visitors Bureau, will be providing a
satellite information desk in the baggage claim area of the Reno Airport.

AirPlayaInfo will operate from Friday, August 22nd through Friday,
August 29th and provide a variety of information and resources for our
Burner friends arriving into the Reno area by plane. The impetus for
this "service" is to provide help to the Reno airport and to our
participants as they navigate their way to and from the playa. This
includes providing information and referrals to local "burner-friendly"
lodging, transportation to and from the playa (this year there are two
independent biodiesel shuttles providing service to the playa), local
shopping and supplies, and the location and schedules for recycling and
garbage disposal. AirPlayaInfo is a radical self reliance jump start and
is intended to help alleviate the issue of "camping out" in the airport
by early arrivals, confusion over where to find supplies locally, and to
support the Leave No Trace ethos of our event by helping participants
properly dispose of items they cannot take on the plane before arriving
at the airport.

We have already received a great response from our Regional and
Volunteer networks and are still seeking volunteers who are interested
and able to staff the AirPlayaInfo table at the Reno Airport. The
operating days and hours (which are aligned with the Reno Airport's
estimate of peak travel times) will be from Friday, August 22nd through
Friday, August 29th from 9am to 3pm and 6pm-10pm daily. We will need at
least two people per shift and shifts will be between 3-4 hours in
length. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone who is either not
attending the event this year or for anyone who is willing to "commute"
from the playa to the airport to staff a shift at the AirPlayaInfo table.

The Man burns in 45 days...which means we'd like to have an idea of our
staffing capabilities for this initiative as soon as possible. If you
are interested and/or know someone else who may be, please contact me
josh@burningman.com via email (put AirPlayaInfo in the subject line)
with your availability as soon as possible. We would also like to
conduct a short (likely telephone-based) training/orientation in mid-August.

Are you still looking for a camp to call Home during your 2008 Burn?

If so, please consider camping with Sacred Spaces Camp. This camp will be home to the builders, artists, musicians and shamans who are creating the Pantheogenesis Temple. We welcome anybody who wants to participate in the temple, or anyone else who is interested in a relaxed and beautiful camping experience with good amenities and a spiritual vibe. It's a great chance to meet and network with spiritually-centered artists, healers and musicians from "pods" located all over the US -- Chicago, LA, NYC, SF, Reno, Boston, and beyond. Our farthest pod comes from Quebec!

The camp will be a fossil-fuel free zone, with green power hookups for RVs or a swamp cooler for your tent, a communal kitchen (grills, basic cooking infrastructure, shaded cooking area, washing area, tables, etc provided - bring your own food), several showers with grey water set up (bring your shower bag), shaded chillout spaces for those hot playa days, outdoor mate cafe & performance space, red moon womens' hut, psychomanteum yurt, and a soft comfy tea-and-discussion lounge.

We will most likely be hosting some impromptu music, yoga, and other events in the camp itself, but our primary focus will be the art, performance, workshops, and ritual in the Pantheogenesis Temple, which we are building in the nearby Entheon Village.

Registration is currently $125 (paypal), which includes power hookups but no grey/black water removal for RVs. Register now, before registration goes up to $150 on August 1st. All money from camp registration goes towards funding the art in the temple, a large project we highly encourage all Sacred Spaces Camp members to get involved with, many of whom already are.

Pantheogenesis is a 12,000 square foot temple consisting of seven interconnected spaces, each of which has its own artistic and spiritual theme, and each of which will contain music, lectures, ritual and/or workshops. It contains a multitude of amazing art pieces, over 1000 crystals, and much amazing beauty. The temple is designed to bring the dreams of the world into manifestation. Visit www.pantheogenesis.com for more details.

We are conveniently located in the heart of all the action near Entheon Village and center camp, but set back from the main street for privacy and serenity.

We ask that each person contribute one 3-hour shift towards keeping the place clean throughout the week.

If you are interested in registering with us, please contact Ayla at yogateacher7@gmail.com

Love,
The Sacred Spaces Crew

911 Service in Black Rock City

From Joseph Pred, Emergency Services Department Operations Chief:

Please feel free to forward to your other Burning Man-related lists:

__________________

"911" Service in Black Rock City

In recent years Burning Man as an event and as a community has grown,
and the Emergency Services Department (ESD) has developed in tandem
with Black Rock City in providing 911 services such as EMS, fire,
mental health, and emergency communications. In 2007 ESD started
offering a remote way for theme camps, art projects, and participants
to get help and in 2008 we plan on building on what we learned from
the first trial year of service.

While all the conventional ways to get help are still available (for
example know your local Ranger or where the nearest Emergency
Services Station is), we wanted to enhance safety by providing an
option for those who might have a specific concern or for those who
just want be helpful to others in their neighborhood. This is
accomplished by ESD and Rangers monitoring the license-free MURS
(Multi User Radio Service) radio band.

MURS is a service similar to FRS (the frequencies that Motorola
Talkabouts and similar radios use). As on-playa radio users can tell
you, FRS is extremely overcrowded and in use by thousands of
participants during the event. FRS radios are also not powerful
enough to effectively communicate throughout Black Rock City. MURS,
in contrast, is currently not in common usage and operates at a
higher power so it can communicate across the entire playa.

We hope that with the intention of reserving this "911" channel
before MURS use becomes widespread at Burning Man will set the
expectation that this channel will be for emergency use only. You
will need to purchase your own MURS radio to contact ESD 911, but the
other four MURS channels can also be just like the FRS channels for
other purposes. Large camps or villages might also choose to make one
part of their group planning efforts and store it in a public place
for emergency use.

Why do I want one of these when my FRS radio works just fine?

* If you're part of a large theme camp it could be a good investment
to have a MURS radio around to call 911 for your group, especially
if you have members who have known health issues or the risk of
injury is of special concern.

* Large art projects working out on the open playa will be able to
get help faster.

* Camps that are on the outer-rings of the city and are far from a
Ranger outpost or Emergency Services station don't have to send
runners for help when an emergency arises.

* The other 4 channels on MURS can be a great alternative to crowded
FRS channels, especially if your camp has an art-car or event-wide
project they want to coordinate.

* Emergency Services Dispatch cannot be reached on an FRS radio.

Calling 911

FOR ALL MURS USERS: we ask that all Burning Man participants respect
that channel 5 will be used as a 911 channel only. While the other
channels are fine for use as an alternative to FRS, we want to stress
that channel 5 on MURS please be kept open for emergencies and not
used for any other purpose.

Set your MURS radio to channel 5, code 11 (154.600 / CTCSS 97.4) to
reach Black Rock City Emergency Services Dispatch. Using any other
"privacy codes" on channel 5 will interfere with 911. Instead limit
your personal use to channels 1-4.

If you have further questions or need help in finding a source for
radios, please email 911@burningman.com for more information.

An example of a compatible radio:

Dakota Alert MURS portable (operational controls just like common FRS
radios, with selectable channel and code on the display) $89
http://www.dakotaalert.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=56

--

Operations Chief, Emergency Services

Traveling Cirkus looking for venues to play at pre-BRC

Cirkus Pandemonium is a traveling cirkus troupe that embraces the new-wave small top cirkus movement. We have been touring since 2005, and have been developing a show that combines acrobalance, aerial silk, unicycling, juggling, burlesque, and sideshow acts with a theatrical world of goblins and faeries. We will be in Reno, Nevada from the second week of August through the beginning of the Burning Man festival, and are interested in finding venues to perform in while we're in town. If you have a favorite bar or club that features live acts who you think we would be well suited to, please send me a message with the information. If there is an interest, we would also be willing to set up workshops to teach aerial and acrobalance skills. Thank you for your help in bringing our unique and impressive show to Reno.

Need a Water Barrel?

Hey Everyone,

As some of you may know, the local Save Marts (formerly known as Albertsons) have over the years increasingly done a whole lot for burners around the time of Burning Man, as well as year-round -- whether operating free drive-thru recycling centers in their parking lots, hosting rideshares, carrying a huge variety of goods that burners need for the playa, or helping out with some recent playa-cup projects -- the Save Marts continue to go well beyond most businesses in serving the shopping and community needs of burners without $ being the primary motive....

More from me on some of the great things the Save Marts will be doing this year for burners will be coming out over the summer....

As for now, some fellow burners and good friends of mine work for a few of the Save Mart supermarkets in town. Last year, they began carrying water barrels in various sizes for burners. They have about 50 brand new (blue) 30-gallon water barrels right now, that they are going to clear from their inventory, and well below what they paid for them.

And they much rather let fellow local burners get them first.

They will cost you $25 per barrel (+tax).

Nothing wrong with the barrels. No strings attached or obligations. Save Mart just wants to focus on selling 15 and 55-gallon barrels for this year's burn and beyond, and they don't have unlimited space to store everything.

If you are interested in acquiring one or more of these barrels, please contact Todd Baldwin at 846-9779, between the hours of 8am - 9pm, Monday thru Saturday. If you get his voicemail, please leave him a message -- he will get back to you, so you can both then arrange as to where and when you can pick one or more up. After making arrangements with Todd, do plan on eventually picking a barrel(s) up at either the Keystone Avenue or Plumb Lane Save Mart. Or you can also email Todd at toddb0001@aol.com.

If you are interested in getting a water barrel, I recommend getting them while they last.

Nathan

Performances @ Nada Motel

If you don't know, Nada Motel is this year's incarnation of Dada Motel. http://tribes.tribe.net/nadamotel. Last year we had 17 motel rooms filled with art exhibitions and off-shoot events all around downtown such as the tower of TV's, the Neon Trainyard and Shiva Vista-ites spinning; these were all down on 4th Street.
This year we're staying more confined to the intersection of 2nd & Arlington where our two motel locations are: Hotel El Cortez and the Town House Motorlodge. The TH has a very big parking lot where I'm hoping HOOPERS, SPINNERS, BURLESQUERS, and AERIALISTS would like to participate. Actually some of that would happen inside the Trocadero Lounge, which, for our event will be called the Cock Fight Lounge; music, dancing and entertainment happens all 4 days. Tova is heading up the Cock Fight Lounge; so go to our tribe and hit her up if you wanna know more about the Lounge events or to BE a lounge event.
Events are free to the public. This is a DIY, crowd-participation event and we've got DJs coming from LA, artists coming from LV and Sacramento, so I'm telling you it's BIG.
Last year we had 1000 people come through the Cortez. This year.......?
If your group is interested in performing in the Cock Fight Lounge, talk to Tova, if you're more of a parking lot fanatic, talk to me. I can set it up with the owner.
And by all means, anyone that would like to get a room, reserve them NOW at the Town House: 323-1821

Thank you,
Chad Sorg

Post-Playa Event Planning Meeting, Monday, May 12, 6pm

Hello,

This Monday, 6pm, at the Se7en Teahouse, there will be a formative planning meeting for our regional post-playa event.

If you would like to take part in helping to bring this community experience of a lifetime to fruition over the months ahead, please come to this meeting....

....However, this event is about working together, and will always be open to your partipation and creativity, so, please feel free to get involved whenever and however you may, while staying tuned ~

You may also wish to come and take part, or at least keep tuned into the ongoing discussions and consensus over on the tribe.net, at the tribe currently still known as Reno Decompose (new name tbd):

tribes.tribe.net/renodecomposition

If you are not yet aware, www.tribe.net is free to join, and this event's focus tribe is particularly open and easy for the planning of this event between meetings.

____

All that has been decided thusfar is that this event will be on October 18th, 2008.

It is generally understood that 700 - 1000 people living in and well beyond our region will participate with this event. (Remember how Reno Decompose had somewhere in the vicinity of 650 participants).

The variety and experiences of past Yuri's Nights, Reno Decompose, decompression, recompression, fundraisers, and other events and parties, are the building blocks with which this event is being built upon, and the glue of course is the enthusiasm, reciprocity, and creativity of community participation ~

Thusfar, a few of us have been looking at the venue(s) which will most easily accomodate expected participant capacity, so that there is not a repeat of prior events, where some folks had to wait in line to get inside. Other important factors considered are infrastructure, track record, capacity for variety, location, and minimal costs. A venue(s) may have been found, ...but that is something to be decided at the meeting (or to be found out in the meeting notes).

Other topics currently under discussion:

Theme / Name
Inclusivity and Variety
General layout
Admission Price
Expenses
Donation Recipents
Networking
Publicity
Timelines
We have to burn something ! What, and how to make that happen?
What could Jeff's playa name be!? I personally am laying heavy with "The Wild and Crazy Jeff," but....I digress.

Anyways, again, this meeting is at 6pm, Monday, at Se7en Teahouse, and here is a map link to where the Se7en Teahouse is located in downtown Reno:

maps.google.com/maps

Thank you!

This will be Cheryl’s fourth surgery in four years and although she has health insurance the lack of income during recovery time has created a financial hardship.
We are hoping the community can now give back to Cheryl in the form of donations for the Silent Auction and we are still looking for a food
donor and helpers for the event and if you are unable to do any of the above cash will gladly be accepted.

The event will be held Sunday May 4 at Skoosh Ink, 120-F Woodland Avenue, Reno from 2:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m.

Music will be provided by the Rick Hammond Band, beer by Great Basin Brewery, wine will also available. Silent Auction items include a
Burning Man ticket, several Burner Costumes, Tie Skirt, Drum, Mask, Paintings, Wood Art, Jewelry, gift certificates for Massage, Rolfing, Reiki, Gift Baskets, Facial, Hydrotherapy Colonic, Windy City Pizzeria donating a one year of pizza value $300, Housecleaning, Psychic Consultation, Prism Magic, El Adobe, Jin Shin Jyutsu, a Week for Two at a Condo value $1500, Reno Blues Society with a membership & RBS items, Guitar Woody with CD’s & T-Shirts .

May 3rd Fundraiser @ the Bliss

Just a few weeks after Yuri's Night, another great event at the Bliss Nightclub is upcoming on May 3rd, with some fantastic dj's and mayhem, all for the cause of raising funds for the medical expenses of the daughter of our very own d6.

And then the very next day, the great fundraiser for our Cheryl Kiraly @ the Skoosh Ink -- is likely to be a lot like (and yet a lot different than the) recompression parties back in the day....~

Some great times to be a part of that weekend AND for some very great causes!

Here are some further details regarding the May 3rd Fundraiser @ the Bliss from d6 :

_________

DJ Event Moonlights as Fundraiser -- Reno, May 3rd

Hiya - so after the onslaught that was Yuris, we just paid for the Art space today, it's back to gravity and all of the awesomeness that is paying for medical bills. We're not doing a super-fantastic Skoosh-style event (which if you can attend, please do -- May 4th for Cheryl Kiraly), however, we are holding another mind-melting extra-sauce-please dj extravaganza on Saturday May 3rd, with any proceeds going towards the latest LPCH @ Stanford medical bills incurred last month.

The Details:::

SATURDAY MAY 3rd
9pm
21+
Bliss Nightclub, 535 East 4th Street
AN.TEN.NAE - the Black Rock favorite making 1st Reno appearance - the Feb. show in Tahoe crushed all packed in the room -
GT / mildy tolerating d6 - aka "Sauce w/ Sauce" - dj mania w/ drumms
The Rhino
Jeremy C.
Ryan H.
Debauchery

thanks very much.

Greetings, Fellow Earthlings,

A few emails will be following about food and recycling for our second annual Yuri's Night Reno-Compression, but for now, we could use a few volunteers to help with the Playa-Cup Project.

The fun involved would simply involve an hour of your time, meeting and greeting folks that enter through the Bliss Nightclub portal, and a
few simple, interactive zero-gravity tasks, which I can discuss with you off-list.

If you are interested, please pm me or transmit via perseverential@yahoo.com.

Thank you,
7 days Until Blast Off... Yuri's Night Reno-Compression!

From Mister Jellyfish:

>>>You know that excitement you feel right before you leave for the playa?

The tummy butterflies and electrical charge in your back teeth when you know you are about to travel to a world where ANYTHING can happen? That feeling is yours again at Yuri's Night Reno-Compression 2008!

It is T-minus eight days and counting until Saturday, April 12th when our local Burner community comes together for the second annual event that reconnects us with art, friends, music. AND SPACE! I joined a conference call with Yuri's Night organizers in Bulgaria, India, Nigeria, Canada-- all over the world as we prepare to celebrate the anniversary of human space flight and we're all a-flutter! Visit the international website at www.YurisNight.net .

Here's updates and details, which I'll try and condense for you, and more specific info is at the event website www.MutantVehicle.com/yuri.htm .

Dig:

* Because this year's event is at the smaller venues of both Bliss Nightclub and Artspace On 4th St., and the advance tickets are only $10
($12 at the door), there is a chance it could sell out. Stop by The Melting Pot or Prism Magic Clothing to snag your launch passes quick for you and your friends. All proceeds go to the Jackbot and Zsu Zsu playa art installations.

* We will be attempting a large screen live video link with other Yuri's Night events around the world.

* We need a crater full of pillows for the Deep Space Chill Zone, the coziest snuggle pit... IN SPACE! Contact Izard at chaponot@hotmail.com to help.

* Finger food is better than Space Food Sticks, but both will work for peckish cosmonauts at an all-night party. Contact Nathan at
perseverential@yahoo.com so we don't all bring the same chow.

* Bob Noxious is building a rocket and chill pit in a satellite dish. To participate in his work days, roger-beep him at rfclarkson@aol.com .

* Mini-Theme Camp and art placement is going fast. Contact Kernul Killbuck at 4doobers@pyramid.net to reserve your spot... IN SPACE!

* Because the dual venues are across the street from each other, mutant vehicle artists would be perfect for occasional shuttle service. If
you're not street legal, you may get by with a free DMV one-day-move permit. Contact me, Mister Jellyfish at sinktrap@charter.net to coordinate your delicious art car.

* The burn permit is "Go" for outdoor fire performing. Justin Cunningham of Reno Controlled Burn will be in charge of outdoor fire art until
1:00 AM, after that we need a volunteer (he wants to play too!). Show up at the following if you plan to spin or burn:

* Final Yuri's Night Planning Mixer: "Mission Critical" will take place Friday, April 11th, 7:30 PM (eve of the event) at Bliss Nightclub. Please
come prepared by joining our conversations NOW at:

* The Yuri's Night chat board on Tribe: http://tribes.tribe.net/reno-yuri is where we work out details. When you post there, get ready for a
space-age welcome!

* Zsu Zsu's Game Show will be performed at 11:45 PM at the Deep Space Chill Zone (Artspace on 4th St.). Will the REAL Zsu Zsu stand up?!

Things will be better... IN SPACE!

From Brother Izard:

______________

[Hailing frequency]

Yuri's Night, Reno-Compression 2008 is fast approaching! I need your help to make the chill shpaaaace extra comfy...

The main party space will be at Bliss nightclub on 4th ave, however the chill shpaaaace will be a soft and cozy seperated bar and food location at The Studio on 4th.

Here's where I need your help. I need as many pillows as can be piled into this 12' x 60' space. We will have the ever-comfy Rose Installation, Miss Laura's phluffy futon pile, and assorted large cushions, as well as a few lounging cushions, but we need volume at a discount.

Contact me via e-mail, at izard.cheesygoodness@gmail.com, or via tribe if you can either contribute your pillows, cushions, futon mattresses the day of, or if you are in the Reno/Carson/Tahoe area and want to donate plush items I can come pick up. If you'd like I can take your name and addy, we can figure out together the value of your donation to the cause, and after the event I will donate your item to the neighborhood charity thriftstore (in your name) and get a receipt in your name for you to use as a tax right-off. If you are planning to attend the party on April 12th, and can bring pillows to the Studio on 4th, even better. You shall be awarded for your generosity most appropriately. Did I mention we will have a bar?

Thank you to all for your consideration. See you soon... IN SHPAAAAACE!

chorus needed for recording project: talent NOT req'd

Hey Reno Burners...

I am producing a satire of Burning Man based on the Who's "Tommy". It's getting some positive attention in the bay area, John Law thinks it's entertaining at least. But he would, all things considered.

It's a good-natured jab at the cultish trappings the event embodies, and set out to remind folks ( those who need it) that the festival is all about your friends, making new ones, and generally enjoying the company. It's not about themes and "leveraging a brand" ( check out the Business 2.0 article featuring Marian and Larry... I advise taking an antacid first ). For those that don't need reminding, it's a slick production of sound-alikes based on "Tommy", with lyrics that roast our favorite little desert get-together. Laughing at yourself is always good therapy. In my opinion, anyone who can't laugh at themselves or their sacred cows has a serious issue to work through.

There is a part in the show that calls for a chorus of people responding to Larry... ("we're not gonna take it, never did and never will, etc") I'd like to do this part of the recording locally here in Reno. I have but one voice, and it does not a chorus make. What I need is a small crowd to get together and shout out these lyrics. Serious vocal talent is not required, just the willingness to get involved.

Here's a website with demo versions of the songs as they are right now. The one that needs this chorus is "we're not gonna buy it", the finale of the show.

http://www.dukereslabs.com/larry/index.html

Please consider participating.

At least look for the act wandering on the Playa in '08!

I'm building a project for this years' burn as a tribute to my friend
Brad who died skiing here in Idaho. Imagine a field of skis, tails buried
in the playa, with a pathway that leads to a solitary pair, tips
buried, helmet hanging on the tails, a tribute to a fallen friend. To
achieve this I need those old skis that are hanging in your garage,
never to be skied again. I'm hoping for at least 100 pairs. Please
email me at graydon @ cableone. net if you can help! I would ask folks to start hoarding them now, and
either bring them to the burn, or we'll figure out a way to get them from you

Hi All,
A burner friend of mine is producing a couple of shows in the Bay Area. Thought I'd pass it along if any of you happen to be going over t
he hill.

February at The Climate
www.climatetheater.com
285 9th St (at Folsom)

"The mixtape is a post-modern art, a collage of intent showing what
you've got in order to get something you want. This artful agenda
perseveres even if it's on CD. Or, in the case of EDT's Mixtape,
onstage."
-East Bay Express

Come check out the best in Bay Area beatboxing talent in an electric
and eclectic mix of hip-hop theatre and vocal percussion offerings
to the stage, setting fairy tales against the backdrop of the urban
sprawls where he's worked as an oral historian for the past decade.
Drawing from communities stretching from Oakland's murder 20's to
Dublin Ireland's Liberties slums, Barsky conjures an inspiringly
unique mix of hip-hop theatre, beatboxing, traditional Jewish folklore
8pm, $10
Bay Area Beatbox Champion Maximillion takes the stage with the
absolutely mind-blowing Syzygy, and Bay Area favorite The Genie.
These three simply have to be seen -- and heard -- to be believed.
Imagine a beatbox evangelist with unparalleled technical skill,
pairing up with a vocal bassliner that's like a sub-woofer in your
soul, and the ultimate musical magician of looping guitar licks.
That's what you're in for here, folks. This is gonna be off the hook.

Tickets for all shows available at the door.

A few days before xmas, a donation of $644 worth of art supplies, including some additional art supplies donated by Nevada Fine Arts, was donated to the kids at Kids Kottage. The $644 was 1/2 of the leftover funds from Reno Decompose. Here is some information regarding the Kids Kottage:

The other $644 was simply donated earlier today to Reno Youth Art Works. Here is some information on Reno Youth Art Works:

Both donations were made on behalf of the "Reno-Regional Burning Man Community," and the recepients were decided upon consensus over on the Reno Decompose tribe:
THANK YOU to everyone who made Reno Decompose a wonderful success -- the gift of these funds is very much appreciated !!!

As the day progresses many santas will fall by the wayside, such is the nature of the beast, so we when we are 6 hours ahead hemmoraging drunken santas can call our baltimore santas and pass the torch as you start.
anybody interested in making this happen, Preferably someone who is able to get a megaphone when needed and is not averse to standing up and telling 400 stantas to shut the fuck up so you can take the call.

Schizopolitans @ The Underground THIS Thursday

Genre: Experimental Rock (Avant Pop) Their live fervor has been compared to greats such as the Clash and Talking Heads.

Somewhere between here and there, exists Schizopolitans. A trio consisting primarily of two drummers and a laptop, the combustion created may seem spontaneous, but is meant to be an organized chaos. Singer Xtevion's guttural growls balance out the percussive tackle of Mancuso's drum playing, while Vineyard fills the canvas with sinister machinery and layers of neu noise. Schizopolitans take the meat of their influences and stir fry them together in a psychotic wok of Pop sounds and create their own brand of rock and roll that could only be a product of the new millennium.

My name's Jonathan.

I am in reno for work and i want to plug in to
the local alternative community. Ideally, i
would set myself up with invitations to local
potlucks or circles, bodywork or coaching
trades, or just opportunities to meet someone
whom i can sit and have some tea with and get to
know a bit.

Would you consider helping me out? I would love
any suggestions, introductions, offers for
trades, invitations to tea or a hike, or
opportunities to be in service.

Thanks for considering it. Please use my email
to respond or give a call...
Mostly, I need something soon. My experience is mostly in design work, but I am open to anything.
A position at a jewelry or gift store or graphic design position would be great.
Any help or advice would be great, as I'm still pretty new to town.
Thanks!

The leaves are changing, there a clean crisp nip in the air. That means it is Fall Cleaning Time. Yea! During the cleaning process many of us find things that we don’t need anymore but doesn’t belong in a landfill. We can try Freecycle, but it if it is really broken, no one else wants it, so we don’t know what to do with it. One of the biggest problems is trying to environmentally dispose of old computer products. I received this the other day and thought I would pass it on for those of you who have old computer products taking up space and need to find someone to take them off your hands.
Reno Decompose could use a few things...

Reno Decompose, set for this coming Saturday, October 20, is in need of a few small things from you, the community, please.

First, carrying on in the tradition of former decompression parties, in addition to all of the other variety of entertainment and interactivity, Reno Decompose will be a potluck ! Please bring easy food for yourself and others to share. There will be common tables provided for food placement. Please also be sure to clean up after yourself, take back home with you any containers which you bring, while reusable plates and silverware are very much encouraged, all in the spirit of Leave No Trace ~ This potluck however does not mean you can bring any booze or other liquid refreshment (only grub), unless of course you want to donate it freely to the bar.

Second, please also bring your favorite playa cups -- and not just for you, but for others, too. Not only will using your own cup, minimize waste, you will also be able to perhaps relive some playa memories with your cup, as well as be able to make less trips to the bar (remembering that this is going to be a very large event), if your cup is larger. (Drinks will of course cost proportionately). You may therefore want to mark your cups, say with masking tape and a sharpie. Masking tape and sharpies will in any case be provided at the event.

Third, Reno Decompose will also be a recycling event. In addition to bringing reusable cups and silverware, trash cans will be located around the area to respectively deposit bottles, cans, and plastics, apart from trash cans. Your care and participation is very much appreciated !

Fourth, we are however still in need of large trash cans for recycling. If you have any which you can lend for the event, please contact me off list at perseverential@yahoo.com.

For further information, comments, curiosity, and how to get further involved with this post-playa party of a lifetime, please check out the Reno Decompose tribe over on the tribe.net.

Further announcements due out shortly ~

Reno Decompose Planning Meeting, Tuesday, Sep. 25, 7pm, at the Club Underground

The next Reno Decompose planning meeting will be Tuesday, September 25th, 7pm, at the Club Underground.

555 East 4th Street, Reno, a few blocks east of downtown Reno

Please park around back and go through the back door, as they are opening up the place a little early just for us..

Note, our usual, big meetings, tend to go on for 2 - 4 hours, so, one way of looking at it, is seeing it as also an opportunity to mingle with your fellow burners, and perhaps party a little, if you wish...

If you have been to previous meetings, PLEASE come to this one !

If you have not been to previous meetings, PLEASE come to this one !

Not only is this our first meeting post-BRC 2007, giving us a chance to reconnect with everyone, it is also likely to be our biggest, and perhaps most pivotal planning meeting thusfar, where a lot will be shared about what is doing thusfar, what needs help, questions, discussion, and where a whole lot more ideas and creativity and synchronicity can perhaps hatch and grow...

Lots of people wanting to get involved, and that have already been involved, a great time to get back into the full swing of planning this burner community event for and by the burner community of a lifetime...

Lots of what will be covered there and agreed upon will be going forwad, so it is the prime time to get involved, before the event itself, Saturday, October 20, at the Club Underground...

In case you already didn't know, Reno Decompose is likely to be the largest burner-event in Reno, yet, picking up where all decompression, recompression, precompression, and Yuri's Night parties have paved the way and left off...

Three things that are in special need for this upcoming planning meeting:

1) If you have pictures from Burning Man, and would like to share them at Reno Decompose, Kahele is organizing a photo wall. They may also very well end up on a projection screen. Get them onto a cd, please. Bring them to the meeting...

2) From d6 -- "if anyone has brc video footage from 2000 - 2007 (any format), and would like to see some of it used in a video project we're editing, please bring it to the meeting. You will get your tapes/sources back before 10.20..."

3) We could really use more theme camps, art installations, and art cars for the large interactive space we will be having out back of the Club Underground that night. Controlled Burn, the Shiva Vista Project, some art cars and theme camps are already slated for out back, but we have LOTS of space to play with....

And if you have any questions, aside from asking in the above forum, you can also field them to renodecompose@hotmail.com.

Please spread the word !

Friends of Black Rock Autumn 2007 report

Hello Dear Friends, Members, and Desert Dwellers--

The summer has passed, and autumn has descended on the Black Rock Desert. Overcast skies and chillier temperatures are moving in, and the dust is just now settling here in Gerlach since the end of Burning Man. The last piece of perimeter fence was brought down September 19th, and very little remains on the site besides the occasional bit of litter, soon to be swept up in the playa restoration phase.

The year has been a busy one for the Friends of Black Rock High Rock (FBRHR), with many exciting accomplishments over the summer. To find out what we did over the spring, please check out http://blackrockdesert.org/news/. Here's a recap of our summer activities, and our upcoming events.

Perseids Meteor Shower

From August 11th to 13th, FBRHR and the Nevada Outdoor School (NOS) held the 3rd Annual Perseids Meteor Shower Camp-Out, smack dab in the middle of the Black Rock Desert playa. The weather was clear and temperate, and nearly 125 people participated over all three days. The NOS crew helped to put up our big green army tent, which provided a common meeting area for all the campers, and Burning Man kindly supplied the dual porta-potty trailer. On Saturday, the Friends of Nevada Wilderness and NOS conducted a wilderness hike and mining post removal project, with about 20 people participating. Later in the evening, Metric from FBRHR conducted a quiz show, asking Black Rock trivia questions and awarding prizes for the correct answers. The pot luck dinner was a varied and voluminous offering-- beer was generously provided by Great Basin and New Belgium Breweries, and generously consumed by the event participants.

Of course, the meteor shower was very nice, too. The frequency seemed to peak earlier than predicted, with more activity between 11 pm and midnight. Often several meteors could be seen at once-- everywhere people were spontaneously exclaiming in awe, with the Milky Way sprawled out across the sky and the moons of Jupiter visible through binoculars. Some of the meteors lasted for several seconds and left fuzzy trails of stardust as they zipped across the sky.

Burning Man

This year's Burning Man event provided the Friends of Black Rock with a great opportunity to get our message in front of a large desert audience. We participated with the Friends of Nevada Wilderness, BLM, Desert Research Institute, Nevada Outdoor School, and the Nevada Division of State Parks in providing a display for the interpretive camp installation called "The Playa," situated directly next to the Earth Guardians camp on the Esplanade. Friends of Black Rock provided information for one of the displays and handed out newsletters and brochures-- a big thank you to Dave Mensing of State Parks for putting it all together, and to the Nevada Outdoor School for providing volunteers to attend the exhibit throughout the event.

A Friends of Black Rock poster display was placed at the Burning Man installation also, as part of the large showcase of environmentally balanced groups, projects, and technologies, although complications due to the early vandalism of the Man prohibited this from being as successful as it might have been. The event itself was also exceptionally dusty, which hampered mobility and made it more difficult to hold instructive talks and media interviews.

Gerlach Visitor Contact Trailer

FBRHR manages this facility for the BLM which is situated just outside of Gerlach, and this year we are on track to contact more visitors with more volunteers than last year. The trailer houses a beautiful array of interpretive displays about the historical, paleontological, and other values of the region, along with may different printed brochures, travel guides, maps, and reference materials. The trailer was open throughout the Burning Man event, and we could not have done this without the significant support of the Nevada Outdoor School and Friends of Nevada Wilderness. The trailer remains open through the second week of October-- if you would like to come out some weekend and volunteer, please contact Matthew Ebert at (775) 557-2900 or metric@blackrockdesert.org, or visit http://blackrockdesert.org/projects/visitor_contact_trailer.php

Coyote Springs Restoration

On Wednesday, August 29, and Thursday, August 30, the Friends of Black Rock convened the Coyote Springs Restoration project with participation from the BLM, Friends of Nevada Wilderness, Nevada Outdoor School, and volunteers recruited by the Earth Guardians. The first chore was to remove vehicle tracks by raking and sweeping, including the playa surface approaches to some degree (within about 30 feet of the dune slope). Eroded dune material (dirt) was replaced by shoveling the displaced loose material back onto the original mound location. A roadway which had developed from inappropriate vehicle use was removed by working the ground into a very rough, uneven texture, and indigenous vegetation was transplanted into this and other locations to facilitate the retention of wind-blown indigenous seeds and to camouflage t
